Integrate Your Macs with Active Directory and Apply Energy-Saving Policies
Likewise joins Mac OS X computers to Microsoft Active Directory, effectively integrating Mac machines into a Microsoft Windows network so you can manage all your computers from a single, central source. An immediate benefit is that you can apply energy-saving group policies en masses to all the Macs in your enterprise.
Likewise gives you two options for managing Macs with group policy:
1. Applying Mac-specific Likewise policies to Macs with the Microsoft Group Policy Object Editor and the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC).
2. Using Apple's Workgroup Group with Likewise Enterprise to apply energy-saver preferences as group policy objects (GPOs).
Going Green
Energy-saving group policies save money, conserve electricity, and reduce pollution. Likewise Enterprise includes the following green policies for Mac OS X servers and workstations. These policies are managed with the Group Policy Object Editor (GPOE).

System Sleep Timer. This group policy puts a target Mac OS X computer to sleep after it has been idle for a set period.
Display Sleep Timer. This group policy puts the screen of a target Mac OS X computer to sleep after it has been idle for a set period.
Disk Sleep Timer. This group policy puts the hard disk on a target Mac OS X computer to sleep when it is not in use.
Sleep on the Power Button. This group policy sets the power button to put a target Mac OS X computer to sleep. When the power button is pressed, the computer goes to sleep instead of shutting down.
Restart After Losing Power. This group policy automatically restarts a target Mac OS X computer after it loses power. This policy can help recover a workstation or server after a power failure.
Wake Up on LAN Admin Access. This group policy wakes up a target Mac OS X computer when a network administrator accesses it through a local area network Ethernet connection.
Wake Up When the Modem Rings. This group policy wakes up a target Mac OS X computer when its modem rings.
Integrating MCX Green Preferences in AD
Likewise Enterprise gives you the option of managing your Mac network with green preferences in Workgroup Manager, a free server administration tool from Apple for remotely managing user, group, and computer settings on Mac OS X machines. Likewise Enterprise integrates Workgroup Manager with Active Directory by saving Managed Client Settings (MCX) as standard Active Directory group policy objects.
