“We are excited about the Likewise Open project and the solutions that it will provide Canonical's enterprise customers and other major deployments of Ubuntu. Likewise Open allows us to provide end users of the Ubuntu operating system the ability to join their systems to Microsoft Active Directory for user authentication. We look forward to the debut of Likewise Open in the April release of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Long Term Support).”
- Mark Shuttleworth, Founder, Ubuntu project
Canonical’s Ubuntu 8.04 offers easy integration with Active Directory environments for the first time, thanks to a new software package called Likewise Open. Likewise Open utility makes it rather easy to integrate Ubuntu Linux clients into an Active Directory authentication scheme, and the addition of new installation options for Ubuntu has lowered the bar for trying out the system on machines running Windows.

VMware
In the fall of 2009, VMware licensed Likewise technology for future versions of vSphere. After looking at the alternatives, VMware selected Likewise as its preferred partner for integration with Active Directory. Likewise technology will be present in future versions of vSphere, which includes the popular hypervisors ESX and ESXi.
Using Likewise technology, VMware customers can require vSphere administrators to log in to the hypervisor or other vSphere applications using their Active Directory credentials. Instead of using root passwords, administrators are provisioned in Active Directory and given privileged access to vSphere at the directory level. This privileged access enhances the administrative security of vSphere and allows for monitoring and reporting available through Active Directory.
In addition, any Linux or Unix virtual machines created on VMware hypervisors can be integrated with Active Directory using Likewise. Using Likewise Open, administrators can connect the virtual machines to AD, and using Likewise Enterprise, administrators can manage access control, group policy, auditing, and reporting functions.
Likewise is a Select Member of the VMware TAP Alliance.
